Researcher Says ‘Designer Babies’ Will Be Here Soon
A new scientific paper suggests that so-called “designer babies” will arrive within the next two years.
According to bioethicist Kevin Smith, gene editing technology exists that could allow human embryos to be modified to prevent diseases like cancer. Last year, a Chinese scientist claimed to have modified babies to resist HIV.
But are ‘customized’ babies ethical? Smith says it is as long as the technology is used to prevent disease and extend lifespans. Still, he admits that society is “largely opposed to genetically modifying humans”.
