Babysitter Who Violently Shook Infant Charged with Murder 37 Years Later
A Florida woman was arrested for murder of a 35-year-old man as a result of her shaking him when he was just 5 months old. Back in 1984 the then babysitter, Terry McKirchy violently shook Benjamin Dowling when he was an infant. She shook him so hard it caused him to sustain abusive head trauma known as Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Dowling suffered from mental health and physical disabilities his entire life and passed away in 2019.
McKirchy, now 59, was arrested in Texas and is awaiting extradition to Florida to face new charges of first-degree murder.
“The passage of time between the injuries sustained and the death of the victim were considered by the forensic experts who conducted the autopsy and ruled the death was directly caused by the injuries from 1984,” prosecutors said in a statement. “This case was presented to the grand jury, which determined that this was a homicide.”
