35 Year Old Pinelles Murder Solved
Modern technology may of helped solved other mystery. This one dates back to 1987 in St.Petersburg, when unsuspecting 87 year old Opal Weil was violently murdered in her house. Her death shocked the community at the time it happened, but as weeks turned to months, and months turned to years the case went cold. Decades passed and the case was all but forgotten by everyone, except Weil’s family.
It looked like all hope was lost with ever solving the tragedy, until 2020 when the Pinellas County Sheriff Office reopened the case. With the help of genealogical technology they were able to test clumps of brown hair which was collected from the crime scene. The test narrowed it down to one suspect, Michael Lapnieswki Jr., who just so happened to live less than a mile from Weil’s home.
When detectives started looking for Lapnieswki they found that he was living in Mississippi, so they tracked him down and started following the 55 year old. Investigators were trying to collect DNA from the suspect, they saw him throw out a straw at a gas station and collected it. They also came up with a genius plot to get another sample.
Police printed up flyers advertising a free meal at a restaurant near where the suspect lives. They were hoping that he would take up the offer and they would be able to get more evidence. The plan worked, he ate there, and they were able to retrieve a spoon he used.
Lapnieswki has been arrested and charged with 1st – degree murder. He has denied any involvement with the cold case, but police also belive he might be connected to other unsolved cases in the area. READ MORE
