Dramatic Car Chase In Polk County, Related To Mass Shooting
A dramatic scene played out in Winter Have yesterday, after police had been conducting surveillance on someone they believed had involvement in the Jan 30 which left 11 people shot. According to Sheriff Grady Judd, local law enforcement from the Lakeland Police Department as well as ATF officers were conducting an investigation on 21 year old Alex Greene, who they were confident had involvement with the shooting.
As they were watching the house on Cooley Road in Eagle Lake, investigators saw Greene jump into a white Chevy Silverado and drive off. That is when a captain with the department started following Greene, and a 10-15 minute car chase ensued. Eventually officer Eric Harper was successfully able to preform a pit maneuver successfully stopping the truck.
That is when the suspect jumped out and tried to get away on foot. He started running towards a restaurant called Andrea’s. That is when the incident escalated and he car jacked a women who was in the parking lot, firing 6 shots at her car in the process of stealing the vehicle. The stolen vehicle did not make it very far before hoping a medium and crashing into a nearby business.
After crashing the suspect had to be pulled out of the car and was in really bad shape. Life saving measures had to be done on the scene before he was transported to the Winter Haven hospital in critical condition, Greene later died in the hospital. The 21 year old was being monitored for days, and police were confident of Greene’s involvement. Greene who had a lengthy criminal record, have active warrants unrelated to Mondays chase. Lakeland Chief Sammy Taylor said they were hoping to arrest Greene on an outstanding burglary charge and then to interview him about mass shooting.
The departments are still looking for other suspects in the shootings. It was believed that a total of four people were in the car during the time of the incident. They said they are working on “very promising” leads and hope to get the other suspects in custody soon.
