Suspect Hits Sarasota Cop With Car
A 22 year old man named Mark Thomas, has been arrested in Broward County for causing trouble in Sarasota. He is alleged of hitting a police officer with his car while trying to escape after a burglary. He has been charged with multiple crimes
On March 20, Sarasota police officers went to Bird Key to investigate a car burglary that happened around 2 p.m. The victims said that they had belongings stolen from the car. The officers found video evidence that helped them in their search for the car involved in the crime, which was a white 4-door S-Series Mercedes.
The same white Mercedes was later seen in a Longboat Key neighborhood, where there had been reports of another stolen vehicle. The Longboat Key police found out that a car had been stolen. Thankfully, nobody was hurt during the theft. The police received a call just after 9 p.m. that the same white Mercedes had returned to the area.
The officers decided to place their patrol vehicles at the entrance and exit of Bird Key, hoping to stop the Mercedes from leaving. They soon found out that the Mercedes was driving back towards them. The police officer who ended up getting hurt thought that the driver would either try to turn onto a side street or crash into one of the parked patrol cars.
However, the Mercedes drove past a parked patrol car and hit the officer head-on, causing him to flip over the vehicle. The officer was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, but now he is back home and expected to recover fully from his injuries.
Mark Thomas has been in trouble with police before. Since December 2019, he has been convicted of multiple crimes and was just released from prison last month. He was finally arrested at a probation office in Broward County on a Wednesday afternoon.
