Artificial Intelligence Threatens Artists In The Music Industry
When most people think about artificial intelligence, they think about of positive aspects of the application. Sure I can help you out with your work, but at what cost? No one ever really thinks of the negative consequences of AI (except for the people who made The Terminator movies). Well, we better think about it quickly, because artificial intelligence is currently threatening artists in the music industry and their livelihoods.
I was sitting in the studio the other day when a coworker asked me if I had seen the new Eminem and Beyoncé music video. I was confused when I heard this because I hadn’t heard any news about this release. A release like this would have everyone talking. So I searched YouTube for it and came across an account by the name of EMPIRE. Not only did they have the video I was looking for, but they also had Eminem collaborations I had never seen before with artists like Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez, The Weeknd, and Ariana Grande.

Immediately I knew something was wrong. Either I had fallen off and wasn’t keeping up with the newest music or these were unofficial songs. The page had more than 19,000 subscribers so it seemed legit to me. However, I would think an official Eminem page would have more. So I did some more investigating.
Now I must admit, before I heard the songs I had a preconceived notion that the music wasn’t going to be that good, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. I actually didn’t hate the music I was listening to. Good music videos even seem to. I had to watch the video several times to realize everything was generated.
This just comes a few days after music stars Katy Perry, Billie Eilish, Miranda Lambert and many more petitioned the Artists Rights Alliance about the dangers of artificial intelligence in the music industry. According to People, the petition asks the music industry to “cease the use of artificial intelligence to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists,”
The artists also wrote “Unfortunately, some platforms and developers are employing AI to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians, and rightsholders,”
