Tampa Bay Rays Reveal Plans For A New Stadium
For years, there have been debates on whether or not the Tampa Bay Rays need a new stadium. Some would argue it’s necessary for better attendance, while others would argue the opposite with the same reasoning. Well now, we can put all the debating to rest. The Tampa Bay Rays Reveal plans for a new stadium, and everyone is excited about them.
The New Plans
The Rays proposed stadium is already being dubbed the most intimate venue in Major League Baseball (MLB), and it hasn’t even been approved to be built yet. Why? Because the new venue, designed by the architectural firm Populous, only has a capacity of 30,000 occupants. Of those 30,000, around 27,000 of them are going to be fixed seats. The rest of the occupancy plans to go to standing room areas. In comparison to current MLB stadiums, the Cleveland Guardians’ Progressive Field is the smallest stadium with a capacity of 34,830. Therefore, the new $1.3 billion ball field that has been tentatively named the Pavilion, will be considered the smallest venue if it is approved.
Rays President, Matt Silverman, told St. Pete Rising “The park is designed to bring our fans as close to the field as possible, to create a distinctive, compelling game experience.”
According to the plans, the stadium will also be anchoring a massive $6.5 billion mixed-use Historic Gas Plant District redevelopment. This will feature approximately 5,400 residential units, 750 hotel rooms, 1.4 million square feet of office and medical space, and 750,000 square feet of retail space.
The stadium plans will be discussed on June 12th in a meeting with the Committee of the Whole (COW). The Tampa Bay Rays expect to get approvals in July so that they can begin construction in early 2025. If all goes to plan, we will be enjoying a new stadium by 2028.
