Woman Marries Man Convicted Of Killing Her Own Brother
This story couldn’t get any crazier if we tried! A woman just married the man who was convicted of killing her brother in the late 80’s.
Crystal Straus and John Tiedjen started dating after she wrote him a letter in prison saying she forgave him for killing her half-brother. He wrote her a letter back explaining how he didn’t kill Brian McGary and asked her to look harder at the evidence.
Tiedjen said, “I wrote her a letter back and I said I didn’t do it, take a look at this stuff. I believe in God too, and I know things about it, but I didn’t do it.”

He was released from prison July 22 after he was granted a new trial. The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office still thinks they have a very solid case against Tiedjen because he asked a friend to get rid of the gun that killed McGary but Tiedjen’s attorneys say McGary committed suicide instead.
Tiedjen and McGary were roommates at the time of the incident. McGary was found dead inside their shared apartment with one stab wound and a fatal shot to the head.
After police interrogated Tiedjen he ended up signing a statement that said he shot his roomie in self-defense.
They got engaged after Tiedjen popped the question on the phone during New Year’s 2020 but at that point he wasn’t ever sure he’d get out of prison to get married.
