New Gang Task Force in Polk County
In the wake of the January 30 mass shooting in Lakeland, and with an increase in gang related crime in Polk County a new task force to deal with the growing problem has been formed. The announcement which came yesterday was part of a press conference to give an update that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting, and police are still searching for two more suspects. Police say the January 30 shooting which left 11 people injured was gang related, they allege it was a hit ordered because of a drug debt.
So far Nicholas Quinton Hanson and Marcus Dewonn Mobley, Jr. have been charged with crimes in connection with the mass shooting. Detectives used DNA fond on shell casings as well as evidence found inside the Nissan Altima that the shooters were riding in. A 15 year old boy who was inside the vehicle is also facing charges. Law enforcment is still on the hunt or two more people, and are anyone with information on Brent Johnson III and Marquez Green to contact them.
According to Polk County police, last year was a bloody one in regards to gang violence in the area. Law enforcement say last year 59 gang related shootings occurred in the area. A dramatic increase from just 2017 where there was only two gang shootings. The new police task force will be focused on identifying and breaking up these organizations. Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are all collaborating on the new initiative.
