Giant Items Popping Up On Florida Beaches
A conservation group in Miami is making a statement by placing giant items on Florida beaches. They have placed enlarged cigarette butt statues in the sand on Miami Beach. The display encourages people to pay attention to the new law that bans smoking on several Florida beaches. According to the director of Florida Conservation at Ocean Conservancy, “Cigarette butts may be small, but they have a lasting, harmful effect on our wildlife and ocean.”
Cigarette butts contain plastic fibers that are laced with toxic chemicals. When the pieces dissolve, it can build up in fish and other organisms. This has a negative impact on the ecosystem. Miami Beach Mayor, Dan Gilbert released a statement saying,“Let’s get the bad butts off the beach. Smoking is not longer allowed.” Smoking has seen a decrease in users over the past 30 years. The American Cancer society released a new report. The report shows that reduction in usage has led to a substantial decrease in smoking related cancer deaths.
