Florida Teacher Accused Of Tying Autistic Student To A Chair

When it comes to disciplining children in schools, many practices are deemed controversial. One thing I’m sure we can all agree on though, is that a child should NEVER be tied up. Seems like an obvious punishment that should never be considered, but not for two individuals in Florida. A Bradenton teacher and aide are being accused of allegedly tying a student with Autism to a chair for an hour.
The Story
According to a Bradenton Police Department report obtained by WFLA, Takeila Jones, the mother of the child, was notified by a G.D. Rogers Garden-Bullock Elementary School principal that a situation had occurred with her son. A teacher Carina Chindamo and teacher’s aide Taylor Internicola were recorded on camera at the playground using Nylon rope to tie her child to a chair.
The rope was tied to the leg of a chair and the two teachers switched sitting in the chair to restrain the child from moving for about an hour. This is especially disturbing because her first-grade son is non-verbal. Now Jones feels as if she cannot trust the school or the teachers. To add insult to injury, this was on display for everyone at recess to see. “My daughter saw it when they were at recess,” Jones told WFLA. “She didn’t want to say anything to me because she thought ‘It’s his teacher, it’s Miss so-and-so, it’s fine, I didn’t think anything of it. He was over there crying and stuff like that and I didn’t want to get in trouble.’”
Police reported the 31-year-old teacher, Chindamo, was arrested and charged with false imprisonment of a child under age 13 on Tuesday. The 39-year-old teacher’s aide, Taylor Internicola, has yet to be taken into custody. Police are also investigating further to determine if there are any more victims.
