Meet The Youngest Player In MLS, Cavan Sullivan
Everyone has dreamt about being some sort of Professional athlete. Then everyone eventually grows up. Most of us get a job in other fields, but very few actually get to live out their dreams. Well, I want to tell you about a person who not only gets to live out his dream, he gets to do so as a kid. Meet the youngest player in MLS, Cavan Sullivan.
Now before you ask how a 14 year-old is allowed to sign with a MLS team without getting drafted, I’ve already looked into it on the MLS website. On the league’s site it states “a club may sign a player to a contract without subjecting him to the MLS SuperDraft if the player has been a member of that club’s youth academy for at least one year and has met the necessary requirements. Players joining MLS through this mechanism are known as Homegrown Players.”
To my surprise, Sullivan isn’t the youngest to ever sign a contract either. There were actually 4 younger athletes that have done this before. Sullivan does have a chance to be the youngest player to ever play in a MLS game though. He just has to play for the Philadelphia Union before July 29.
Youngest Players To Sign MLS Contracts
- Maximo Carrizo (New York City FC, 2022) – 14 years, 0 days.
- Axel Kei (Real Salt Lake, 2022) – 14 years, 15 days.
- Freddy Adu (D.C. United, 2004) – 14 years, 168 days.
- Emmanuel Ochoa (San Jose Earthquakes, 2019) – 14 years, 191 days.
The Union wants to sign Sullivan early for a couple of reasons. Most believe that Sullivan is considered one of the best young players in the country, but it would be in the Union’s best interest to benefit in the short term before profiting when he likely leaves to play in another league overseas. It also benefits Sullivan because it allows him to stay home for a few more years.
