Tampa Man Arrested 75 Times Since 1985:
Mark Brents, 57, has been in prison 11 times and is well known to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Brents has visited the jail a staggering 74 times since 1985 and was just arrested yet again making it his 75th visit. This he was taken into custody for defrauding a Lowe’s store of more than $4,500 in merchandise in 10 separate incidents. The sheriff’s office’s “Organized Retail Theft Unit” was tipped off when Brents would replace barcodes inside the store. He would find a less expensive item and place it on the more expensive products. When he was checking out, he would then pay the lower price after scanning the cheaper barcode. Everything was caught on camera.
Police also discovered ads posted online, advertising those stolen products. Brents is facing several charges including an organized scheme to defraud less than $20,000, retail theft of $3,000 or more, and felony petit theft. According to WFLA Chad Chronister said, “Our Organized Retail Theft Unit, working hand-in-hand with the Clearwater Police Department, successfully apprehended a career criminal before he could victimize more businesses in our community. This partnership was crucial in stopping a thief who has been a repeated offender for decades and speaks volumes of the power of collaboration between law enforcement agencies. Brents has a very lengthy criminal history unfortunately it doesn’t seem like he will be stopping anytime soon.
