Both are currently hospitalized after the officer was hit head-on after seeing the driver was on the wrong side of the road. After being tested it was determined that the drunk driver was impaired more than three times the legal limit. After the accident he fled the scene but was later found by the St. Pete police department and was arrested.
Wrong-Way Driver Hits Officer On Skyway Bridge:
On Wednesday evening, an officer driving on the Skyway Bridge noticed a wrong-way driver going north in the southbound lanes. 25-year-old Yosman Alexander Ixpata Xitumul, was driving his Dodge Ram pickup the wrong-way for an unknown reason. The trooper attempted to stop him but was unsuccessful. The off-duty officer then tried to overtake the high-speed vehicle and crashed. Xitumul nearly hit him head-on when they both collided as the 33-year-old deputy was driving a Ford F150 at marker 17.
Xitumul then fled the scene after getting into that huge car crash. He ran on foot but was luckily found later and arrested by St. Petersburg police. Both the deputy and the suspect were seriously injured and needed to be rushed to nearby hospitals. After testing Xitumul’s blood-alcohol level it was determined that he was impaired more than three times the legal limit.
According to WFLA, “He was charged with DUI with serious injury, DUI with property damage, aggravated fleeing to elude with serious injury, reckless driving with injury and damage, leaving the scene with injury, leaving the scene with property damage, driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance in a crash.” Our Thoughts and prayers go out to the deputy who was involved in the car crash.
