Why You Should Go Zendaya’s “Challengers” Movie In Theaters
We’ve seen some solid movies come out these past few months. A lot of good films are still to be released this summer as we spring forward. A challenger for film of the year (all pun intended) is the Zendaya-led tennis film, Challengers.
Zendaya not only stars in the film, she also produced it. The premise of the movie is about Zendaya’s character Tashi, who’s a former tennis player, who now coaches her husband Art. Art is a proven tennis champion but, has been in a slump, and his wife then plots his comeback by putting him in a low-level challengers tournament part of the pro tour. Where he faces an old best friend & wife Tashi’s ex-boyfriend Patrick.
There is so much to unpack with this movie. I was literally hooked the minute I sat down. Zendaya commands the screen immediately, her aura is intense, and her attitude is enough to make you treat her as the bad guy in this film.
From the look of the trailer, it came off to me as a toxic tennis movie. The viral scene of Zendaya being seduced by the two male leads of the movie, Josh O’Connell & Mike Faist, has sent society into a frenzy. It’s enough to make Zendaya’s real-life boyfriend cover his eyes. That scene is just the beginning, if you are a Zendaya stan, just know, this movie’s sexual scenes aren’t for the weak.
I enjoyed the story. The only gripe with the film was the time jumps. In the movie, there is a lot of back and forth between the timeline, with the film beginning in the present day & shifting into the past to create more context for this toxic love triangle throughout the movie between Tashi, Art & Patrick.
I gave the film a 10/10 and highly suggest seeing this movie while it’s in theaters. Peep my spoiler-free review below.
