WATCH: ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ Trailer Starring Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy is starring in Netflix’s new film Dolemite Is My Name, which premieres on the streaming behemoth’s platform this fall.
In the Craig Brewer-directed film Murphy portrays the character of Rudy Ray Moore alongside Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Wesley Snipes, and Snoop Dogg.
The film, based on a true story, pays homage to Moore, a singer, dancer, and comedian whose heyday was during the 1960s and 1970s.
Moore made the 1975 classic blaxploitation film titled Dolemite, which was based on a man of the same name who a local used to tell obscene stories about to Moore.
In the film, Moore has various showbiz failures and eventually has an epiphany. He then uses the persona of Dolemite, a pimp with a cane that’s armed with an “arsenal of obscene fables” for his new act.
Moore then produces a movie about Dolemite, which eventually becomes a box office hit and a defining film during the Blaxploitation era.
