Well, he was the first player to have his jersey retired by a team he didn't play for (Miami Heat), and of course having his jersey stolen in Orlando when he played the Magic, that one time where he had to sport the number 12. Or it could also be the fact that his son, Marcus Jordan, went to school in Orlando, attending the University of Central Florida (UCF).
Florida Store Inspired By Michael Jordan
Marcus Jordan played basketball for UCF from 2009-2012 and has been well-known in the Central Florida area for some years. Now, Marcus' basketball career didn't pan out the way maybe he had hoped, so he shifted to getting his degree in hospitality management at the University. This would lead him to open a high-end sneaker store in 2016, that was dedicated to the legacy & empire his father built, thus you have, Trophy Room.
Since 2016, Trophy Room, located around the central business district in Orlando, has been known to annually release a limited shoe through the Air Jordan brand, and when your dad runs the company, it's like a kid in a candy store when choosing your silhouette. These rare shoes are coveted by sneakerheads all over the globe, & this year is no different. This year, they went with, my personal favorite, the Air Jordan 1 Low.
I was lucky enough to hit on the shoes through their raffle, & I'll just say, pictures don't do this sneaker justice. You have to see them in person! The material & quality are on point, & I love the inspiration. The shoe was inspired by Michael Jordan's rookie year, and every little detail in the sneaker gives off that vibe.
The limited edition Michael Jordan sneaker retailed for $140 but, since it's sold out everywhere, and if you REALLY want a pair, resell value is between $400 - $600.
Check out the sneaker below.
8 Of The Biggest Celebrity Sneakerheads
It’s no secret that some of the biggest celebrities today are huge sneakerheads. I mean, when you’ve got that kind of cash what else do you spend your money on? They can snap their fingers and get their hands on some of the latest and most exclusive drops. Some of the biggest celebrity sneakerheads even have an entire room dedicated to housing their collection.
What is a “sneakerhead”?
Well, they come in all shapes and sizes just like the sneakers themselves. You may not even guess who some of the biggest sneakerheads are. Sneakerheads are just like any other collector, very dedicated to their craft. They typically create their outfits based around their shoes.
This “phenomena” of collecting sneakers began back in the 70s. Athletes and brands started to collab on special issues of shoes, most notably, Nike x Jordan. This started a new trend in sports where brands would create a shoe that embodies a specific athlete. When the Jordan was first introduced and banned from the NBA, it made it that much more desirable and the first generation of collectors were born. Since then, there have been “reissues” of classic styles bringing collectors to race to purchase these rare models.
Why has the sneaker game grown over the years?
The growth of the sneaker game has an intense amount of influence from the internet. With access to creators sharing some of the rarest sneakers around, it has everyone wanting to get in on the action. Brands have started to make limited-run collections with musicians, artists, celebrities … you name it. The more limited the run, the higher the resale value. It isn’t even about how “cool” a pair looks, but instead how rare the sneaker is.
With Sneaker Kulture’s Event coming up at Raymond James Stadium, we thought we should shine a light on 8 of the biggest celebrity Sneakerheads. Here is our list.
DJ Khaled
With over 10,000 pairs in his collection, Khaled might be the biggest sneakerhead in the world. He dedicated an entire room of his house to these shoes and even installed a sliding ladder to reach every pair.
Mark Wahlberg
Marky Mark doesn’t play around. Wahlberg’s collection has an estimated value of over $100,000 and isn’t shrinking anytime soon. When he isn’t starring in films or running a burger chain, he’s looking for his next sneaker snag. He even started selling sneakers as part of his own clothing brand.
Teyana Taylor
Teyana doesn’t play favorites when it comes to sneakers. She’s worked with Reebok and Adidas, but always stays up-to-date on her collection. If there’s a sneaker to match her out, she’ll have it ready.
Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake pretty much does it all. Movies, music, business to name a few. Timberlake is able to get his hands on some of the rarest sneakers in the world and is supposedly in line to create his own sneaker someday.
Chris Brown
Chris Brown gives DJ Khaled a run for his money. According to HotNewHipHop, Brown brought over 1000 pairs of sneakers on tour, sometimes changing multiple times a day. He has not one, but TWO rooms dedicated to his collection keeping his Vans, Nike Cortez’s, Supreme x Nike Air, and AF1s in one room and his massive collection of Yeezys to PSNY x Air Jordan 12s in another.
Jason Sudeikus
Most recently known as Ted Lasso, Jason Sudeikus has a surprising collection of sneakers. If you take a look at him you’d probably think he’s got a case of the Mondays dining at Chotskie's, but Sudeikus is always reppin’ something fresh on his feet.
John Mayer
If you think John Mayer can only play a guitar, you’re wrong. Mayer has become a fashion icon since his breakout over a decade ago collecting not only sneakers, but boots as well. He’s always matching a fresh pair of kicks with his outfit.
Nick Cannon
Nick Cannon was once known as the slime guy over at Nickelodeon, but more recently has been climbing to the top of the list in the sneaker game. According to HotNewHipHop, Cannon has a pair of loafers sporting a price tag of $2M. He’s got a room dedicated to his collection of sneakers with display cases. Checkout his Instagram page for a peek into his sneaker collection.
