Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin. Just a few grains of fentanyl can be deadly, which is why this drug bust is so significant. In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in overdose deaths due to fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. In 2017, more than 28,000 people died from overdoses involving synthetic opioids, which is a 10% increase from the year before.
This drug bust by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is significant not only because of the sheer amount of drugs that were seized, but also because of what those drugs could have done if they had ended up in the wrong hands. Fentanyl is a powerful and dangerous drug that has contributed to a sharp increase in overdose deaths in recent years. We need to continue to raise awareness about the dangers of these drugs and provide resources for those who are struggling with addiction.
