TikTok Challenge Is Raising Crime In St. Petersburg
According to St.Pete Police Chief Anthony Holloway, cars thefts are up in St. Pete because of TikTok’s Kia challenge. He said the number of stolen cars so far this year, is already more than the total number of stolen cars from last year.
TikTok user’s are showing people how to steal Kia and Hyundai models with a very simple item…. a USB cord!!! For 2021 and older Kia and Hyundai models, a USB cord can be use as a key instead of a pushing the ignition button.
St. Pete Police Sgt. Cody Lance said “Essentially they just tear open the steering column, damage the ignition to a point where the key’s not needed anymore, and then they force it to start.” St. Pete Police Department’s numbers show that last year there were 167 car thefts in the city. This year that number is already at 222 with almost half of those cars stolen by the thief using the TikTok Kia challenge method.
Sgt. Lance said make sure you remember to lock your doors and use the Club if you want to try to deter criminals from breaking into your car.
